The JD Edwards EnterpriseOne product at Oracle is receiving an update in nomenclature and how they will refer to the packaging of new features and content. Under the covers, all the previous components are the same; Release 22 consists of Tools release 9.2.6, an ESU cumulative Update 6 as well as an UDO (User Defined Objects) cumulative Update 6. Digital Transformation features that dominate this release include Logic Extensions. A way to build Business Functions on the glass without a Fat Client. If you want to de-customize JDE, this feature will be part of your development toolkit. Using this new UDO type, you can create Data Structures, Variables and then build Logic using the Orchestration Studio. If you are familiar to JDE E1 classic development, Data Structures and Variables will be similar. Logic, akin to Business Functions, is the low-code alternative to use event rules. This amazing feature lets you easily manipulate data, take inputs from the screen or other sources, and write directly into tables. Another feature delivered with R22 is Zero Downtime Package Deployments. When new full packages are being deployed, the deployment server creates a lock on the Enterprise server. During this time users are unable to open applications or submit UBE’s which is why we schedule these to be deployed during an outage. This is not ideal for customers who are running a 24/7 operation which requires that your JDE E1 system to be up constantly. Previously, we would accomplish this by using CNC techniques like virtual pathcodes and multiple enterprise servers (multi-foundation) which were costly to implement and difficult to maintain. In the latest release, when a package is deployed, all existing user sessions continue using the originally deployed package whereas new sessions connect to the new package. This avoids the issues with locking the pathcode and allows seamless operation of JDE E1. Once the existing sessions have drained off, the original package is no longer used. Overall, this improves the package build process and simplifies architecture for customers running 24/7. One that we are recommending all customers utilize and implement as part of their JDE E1 continuous delivery projects.
Another, long overdue, enhancement is the Workflow Studio. It consists of a Java GUI app that replaces the previous 32bit modeler, which was error prone and exceedingly difficult to use. This uplift works from the same tables and will display workflows created using either method. Workflow, as a general concept, has not changed but customers may have abandoned some valuable, workflow-oriented projects, due to previous implementation experience. Checking out the new feature should be on your to-do list, but also looking at previous workflow projects and check out whether your organization can leverage this hidden feature more effective with the latest release.
